Blackwater mercenaries are currently overseeing the police in Greece as rumours of a coup abound. We understand the situation is extremely tense and that the mercenaries are there mainly to protect the Government and parliament should trouble break out either in the form of a revolution or counter-revolution. Already, a destabilisation plot involving the far-right and police has been uncovered. More below…
Update…Academi (formerly Blackwater, then Xe) have issued a statement via the New Statesman denying they are one of six private security companies contracted to the Government of Hellas (Greece), as was categorically claimed by former Greek ambassador to Canada, Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos (although it is possible, of course, that Academi is one of the other five, but working under another name). The Greek Government needs to make an unequivocal statement on the matter and either refute Chrysanthopoulos’ claims or provide clarification on which security companies are contracted and their precise role.
Over the last 12 months or more Greece has seen wave after wave of mass demonstrations, riots, battles between police and protesters, armed attacks on Government premises, attacks by fascists (i.e. Golden Dawn ) on migrants, as well as, of course, the complete collapse of the economy. The Government has been beset by scandals (e.g. secret bank accounts in Switzerland) and journalists have been arrested. Most people now exist day by day via co-operatives ; workers are taking over the factories .
As we have said, there is a revolution taking place – a messy revolution . And it’s going to get messier, for the situation in Greece has now entered a critical phase – here is a summary (with further details below):

* Military coup is now talked of openly
* Insider warns that revolution (or counter-revolution) is imminent
Strategy of tension
A few days ago we reported on a plot by the police in collusion with the far-right to instigate a massacre of police, which would then be blamed on anarchists – presumably this would then be used as an excuse to introduce martial law or a state of emergency. The plot may have been foiled (23 persons were arrested) by Blackwater working in conjunction with police officers who are loyal to the Government. Blackwater are expected to continue monitoring police operations generally, to identify those officers who may be involved in other, similar plots.
Note… The term strategy of tension came about in Italy in the 1970s and 1980s when bombings of civilian were committed by neofascist organisations such as Ordine Nuovo , Avanguardia Nazionale or Fronte Nazionale ).
Mercenaries protecting Government under siege
The Greek Government signed a contract with Academi (the new name for Blackwater) in November last year, though this was a secret agreement and you will not find details about it on the Academi website ). News of the contract leaked out end of January when the Greek ambassador to Canada, Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos, let slip about it in an interview, which was then published in a blog (see highlighted sentence in red). The contract with Academi was confirmed a few days later via the Greek military news site Defencenet.
Blackwater/Academi are infamous as the company that ran mercenary operations during the last Iraq War and were engaged in unnecessary fire fights in urban areas, taking civilian lives. They currently have a forward ops base in Afghanistan.
We understand their principal role in Greece is two-fold. One is to oversee police operations. They have been contracted to do this because the Government are aware that the police have been comprehensively infiltrated by members of the fascist Golden Dawn and so cannot trust the police to stay loyal. Their other role is to act as a neutral force to provide full protection to the Government against assault from any quarter. In effect, the Greek Government is under siege.
Coup possibility
Recently the Government secured an agreement from the army that under no circumstances would they resort to a coup (as happened in 1967, leading to the junta of 1967-1974 ). Whether this agreement will be honoured remains to be seen. As Greece is now part of the European Community a coup will be unlikely, but in the event of heightened tension martial law could be declared with curfews etc.
Warning of revolution/counter-revolution
According to Ambassador Chrysanthopoulos in his interview, “At a certain moment, quite soon, there will be an explosion of social unrest. It will be very unpleasant.” He then referred to fifteen armed incidents in the previous ten days, including the firebombing of the offices of the governing parties and the homes of pro-government journalists, the machine-gunning of the headquarters of the prime minister’s conservative New Democracy party, and a bomb explosion at a shopping mall belonging to the country’s second wealthiest citizen. Chrysanthopoulos predicts the trouble will begin when new tax bills arrive (soon)

In Syria today there was another massacre if children, probably unreported. In contrast, in Greece events to destabilise are more in the background. It can go either way. Our reporting is to be one step ahead and point out scenarios so that people can nip these things in the bud.
Grossly exaggerated and sensationalist reporting. In fact mass riots of the scale seen even a year ago in Athens are getting rarer with increased police presence and aggressive tactics. Military coups threat is non existent. In fact last year several major generals were fired with not even a murmur from the military. And police are firmly under the control of the government as they rely on its clientelism for jobs, jobs which are increasingly valued with the high rate of unemployment. Statments such as “Most people now exist day by day via co-operatives ; workers are taking over the factories ,” is simply not true. I wish it was but it isn’t . There are no more than 2 medium sized companies now that are being self managed by workers (and they are still in there early stages). Two of the last major union led strikes have been promptly ended by government law deeming them illegal.
Golden Dawn does have links with and within the police but they are being mainly used by the major parties to deflect attention for other issues as well as justify a rightward shift by the centre-right party that makes it look centrist given the extremism of golden dawn. Why not talk about the rise of Syriza, which is probably the most progressive center-left party (if you look that the political manifesto there is very little that you could call extreme left in there position) and democratic populist party to arise in Europe in a generation. I do not doubt that Blackwater might have contracts in Greece with the government, but they also guard buildings inside the US and there is no coup threat there.
I don’t think what we are saying and you are saying is radically different. A coup is possible but improbable and martial law more likely if things got out of hand. There are elements in the police who are linked to Golden Dawn who are intent on causing mayhem. The Government is using this as an excuse, as you say, to deflect criticisms from its own failings, but could equally exploit any attacks by far right to order further clampdown. As for cooperatives etc, our understanding is that there are many hidden initiatives given that the mainstream economy has virtually collapsed and that this parallel economy is less visible but very much real, though it may prove to be a temporary solution. The riots are less, but there are signs of exploitation by the far right and this is worrying. Blackwater, which was sold off to Academi, is there, as we understand it in two roles, to monitor police corruption and to provide protection to the Government. There role in both could be low key but nevertheless an indication of how things could develop, as indicated by the ambassadors statement. We should also not discount that the Govt itself can benefit from any stories that suggest things are out if control – including the one we published. This is the nature of politics and why we should always be vigilant.
A couple of further points need to be made….
1. In the article we referred to Academi as the name used by the organisation that once was Blackwater. This is confirmed by a letter received today from Academi, explaining the ecvolution of Blackwater (via Xe) to Academi: see further below.
2. On the matter of Academi staff being employed by the Greek Govt, yes in America this might be considered normal (after all, it’s Academi’s home base) and even more common in developing countries, such as in Africa, where coups are often, but in Europe this is highly unusual: imagine, for example, if it was revealed that 10 Downing Street was being protected by Academi, there would be a national scandal.
3. Strategy of tension: this takes many forms and often reveals itself in subtle ways. It’s important to identify possible activities that come under this label quickly in order to expose them and be one step ahead. This is what we are attempting to do. It’s all about vigilance and being predictive. Hopefully Greece will see neither a coup or martial law and the people will find a way out of this mess.

There seems to be some confusion in the posting entitled “Greece: Blackwater Mercenaries Guarding Govt and Overseeing Police; Coup Feared” which I hope to clarify. ACADEMI does not now, nor have we ever, provided security services to any entity of the Greek government.
In December 2010, a consortium of private investors purchased Xe Services, the company formerly known as Blackwater USA. A board of directors was put into place to guide the company’s future. In addition, a new leadership team was brought in, including world class regulatory and compliance experts. With these, and many other changes in place, the company changed the name to ACADEMI in December 2011. ACADEMI is an independent company with no affiliation to the former owner or management.

Yet another point worth taking on board…
Where there are rumours that a government is about to do something or planning for something or is worried about something happening – e.g. a coup – and so takes preventative action, it is vital this information is exposed so that the public can comment. If the upshot is that the government is then forced to deny this is happening (even if it was!) then that is good as it ensures they have to deal with such issues openly (and may even change tack – better!). Newspapers do this all the time (fifth estate, etc).

Completely stupid article by those who want to create fear for more austerity measures to come. The last 9 months were the most peacefull of the last 3 years and nobody is taking over factories (2 out of tens of thousands should not be in the news according to journalism principles…) . Even general strikes are rare!
If go out on Saturday night you might see less people around (not so less though…) but still you cannot find to park your car! Weird indeed for a country with 30%, but they say the same for Spain: “How on earth 30% does not create fires and killings in every corner”. Not weird at all due to family solidarity and the huge side-economy which is proven a salvation due to the incapability of the politicians to create jobs and the willing of Germany to maintain Greece under pressure.
Golden Dawn is a true problem and social unrest possible. If so it will be like 2011 unless someone from the Gov. will make a idiotic move that will “cause” an intervention of a different kind. Not likely though….

You mention that there have been ‘armed attacks on Government premises’ during the last 12 months. Could you please provide a little more information about that?
The last information that I can find from mainstream media are from 2010 by the group Revolutionary struggel (Epanastatikos Agonas). Have there been more of such attacks during the last year?
